Revolutionizing Gum Recession Treatment

Understanding Gum Recession and Its Consequences

Gum recession is the loss of gum tissue along the gumline, often caused by periodontal disease, aging, orthodontics, or abrasive brushing habits. When gum recession occurs, the root structure of the tooth becomes exposed, increasing the risk of tooth decay, sensitivity, and other dental problems. Treating gum recession is crucial for maintaining a healthy mouth and lasting dental wellness.

The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique: A Minimally Invasive Solution

Traditional gum recession treatments involve using the patient's own gum tissue to rebuild the gumline. While effective, these procedures frequently involve an additional surgical site requiring an additional area to heal. The Pinhole® Surgical Technique offers a minimally invasive alternative with comparable results and a better patient experience.

How the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique Works

During the Pinhole® Surgical Technique, a small hole is made in the gum tissue. Special instruments are then used to gently loosen the gum tissue through this “pinhole”, allowing it to be expanded and slid over the exposed root structure. This technique eliminates the need for scalpels, incisions, sutures, and donor tissue, resulting in a less invasive and more comfortable treatment option. Moreover, the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique provides results comparable to traditional grafting methods. By repositioning the existing gum tissue, this technique can effectively cover exposed roots and create a more esthetically pleasing gumline. The results are natural-looking and long-lasting, providing patients with a healthier, more attractive smile.

The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST®), invented and patented by John Chao, D.D.S., is a scalpel-free, suture-free procedure for treating gum recession.

This procedure is performed by making a small hole with a needle in the gum tissue. Using specially designed instruments, the gum tissue is loosened and guided over the receded part of the tooth. Since there is no incision or suturing, patients can expect minimal post-operative symptoms (pain, swelling and bleeding). Most patients also are pleasantly surprised by the instant cosmetic improvement.
