Non Surgical Procedures

Perio Maintenance
Unfortunately periodontal disease is not curable, however it is maintainable. Regular dental hygiene and periodontal visits will help to keep you healthy in conjunction with excellent home care. Periodontal maintenance is performed for patients with periodontal disease. During the periodontal maintenance, pocket depths are measured to determine areas of concern. All teeth are cleaned and polished. Oral hygiene instructions are reviewed in order to reinforce the importance of home care. For most patients a 3 month recall interval is recommended, however some patients may require more or less frequent cleanings.

Radiographs
Radiographs are a necessary part of diagnosis of disease. Radiographs show information that is not visible on a clinical exam alone. A complete series of dental radiographs should be taken every 3 to 5 years. Our office uses digital radiography which requires less radiation than conventional films.

Scaling/Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is non-surgical periodontal treatment. It is needed for pockets measuring 4 mm or greater. Scaling and root plaining utilizes local anesthetic to numb the area prior to cleaning, as this cleaning takes place under the gumline along the root surfaces. In most cases, a full mouth scaling and root planing will be split into multiple appointments. Following scaling and root plaining as the gum tissue heals, it is common to experience hot and cold sensitivity. This is due to shrinking of the tissue which may expose more sensitive root surfaces. Sensodyne toothpaste can be used to help this symptom. If sensitivity is not responsive please contact Dr. Ratliff.

Fluoride
Periodontal bone loss often results in exposed root which are covered by cementum a surface more prone to decay and sensitivity. Flouride varnish helps to strengthen teeth and decrease the risk of decay. We recommend fluoride treatments as needed to ensure the longevity and comfort of your teeth.
