Gum recession is a common issue that can lead to tooth sensitivity, continued tooth root exposure, and esthetic concerns. We perform the latest surgical treatments that aim to restore and enhance gum tissue to improve oral health, prevent further recession, and achieve a more appealing smile.
Connective Tissue Grafting, also known as CTG, is a surgical procedure performed to treat gum recession and related issues. Gum recession can be caused by various factors, including orthodontic tooth movement, periodontal disease, genetics, trauma, or even aggressive brushing. When the gum tissue recedes, it exposes the tooth's sensitive roots, which can lead to discomfort and aesthetic concerns.
Connective Tissue Grafting involves taking the middle layer of tissue from the roof of your mouth (palate) and transplanting it to the area of exposed roots. This graft serves to cover exposed tooth roots, prevent further gum recession, improve the appearance of your smile and reduce tooth sensitivity.

Free Gingival Grafting, also known as FGG, is another surgical procedure performed to treat gum recession. Unlike CTG (connective tissue grafting) which aims to cover roots, Free Gingival Grafting aims to provide stable bands of keratinized (pink protective tissue around the tooth) tissue preventing further recession.
Much like the CTG, Free Gingival Grafting involves taking a small piece of tissue from the roof of your mouth (palate) and transplanting it to the area with receding gums. The key difference is that, in FGG, the top layer of tissue is taken and placed providing a wider band of tissue.

Traditionally, both CTG (connective tissue grafting) and FGG (Free Gingival Grafting) tissue grafting requires harvesting tissue from your own mouth, resulting in a second surgical site. However, we understand that this approach may not be the best choice for everyone. That's why we proudly offer alternative tissue options for gum grafting that eliminate the need for harvesting from your own mouth and cater to a variety of patient preferences.
Allograft is tissue from a carefully screened donor source. Xenograft, on the other hand, involves the use of tissue from an animal source. Both tissue sources provide an option that is both effective and comfortable.
The Pinhole Surgical Technique®(PST) is an innovative and minimally invasive procedure designed to treat gum recession. Unlike traditional gum grafting, PST eliminates the need for an additional grafting site or donor tissue.
A thorough evaluation by Dr. Ratliff will assess the extent of your gum recession and determine if you are a candidate PST. During the procedure, a tiny pinhole-sized incision is carefully made in the gum tissue near the affected area. Through this pinhole incision, specialized instruments are used to gently lift and reposition the gum tissue, covering the exposed tooth roots.
In some cases, collagen strips may be placed to aid in stabilizing the repositioned gum tissue, promoting healing, and maintaining the new gumline. The repositioned gum tissue naturally adheres to the teeth, eliminating the need for traditional sutures.
Following the procedure, it's essential to follow the post-operative care instructions. These instructions are specifically designed to optimize the healing process and ensure the long-term success of the treatment.
